DESCRIPTION:

Under general direction of the Deputy Director of Public Works, the Superintendent plans, organizes, directs, supervises, and evaluates the activities of staff engaged in construction, improvement, repair and maintenance of parks, recreation areas, trails, natural/open space, grounds, medians, park and aquatic facilities, playground equipment, landscapes, streetscapes, and the urban forest.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree with major work in public administration, horticulture, or park management with 7 years of park, swimming pool, ground maintenance, work in aboriculture, ornamental horticulture, resource management or other related experience, including 4 years of supervisory experience. ALTERNATIVE: HS Diploma, with 10 years of progressively responsible experience in public parks and facilities work, including 4 years of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

SALARY:  $33.41-$40.64/Hr. ($69,493-$84,531 Annualized)

Primary Objective

Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks involving the maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, trails, open space, and related recreation facilities and equipment.

 

Major Areas of Accountability 

         Performs turf maintenance in and around park, trail and recreational facilities.

         Prepares athletic field surfaces for use.

         Performs tree-care maintenance in parks, open spaces, and along trails.                                    

         Maintains landscape and assists in the annual/perennial program.

         Completes routine maintenance of parks, buildings, play areas, and trails.

         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

         Valid driver's license with a good driving record.

         Relevant experience related to construction or maintenance.

         Must have physical strength sufficient to perform strenuous labor tasks under varying weather conditions

Primary Objective

To assist the Forester in providing technical, professional, and advisory services to residents and city personnel regarding forestry and horticulture and assist in a variety of technical activities designed to promote and maintain a healthy urban forest ecosystem.

Major Areas of Accountability 

         Provides the public and city personnel with technical and professional guidance related to controlling Shade Tree Diseases (DED & Oak Wilt) and hazardous trees on public and private property within the city.  Emphasis is placed on maintaining positive relationships with city residents.

         Responds to public requests for information regarding trees and shrubs.

         Assists in reforestation efforts.

         Assists in maintaining GIS inventory including:

         Keeps immediate supervisor promptly informed of developments in areas of accountability to foster well-coordinated program efforts.

         Assists in tree-care programs which include trimming, watering, storm damage clean up and removals.

Minimum Qualifications

         Must have completed one year of course work in Urban Forestry, Horticulture or related field.

         Tree Inspector certification or ability to attain certification within 30 days of employment.

         Must have a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license with a good driving record.

         One year of experience with word processing and spreadsheet applications.

         Familiarity with mobile iPad GIS technology.

         Excellent verbal and written skills.

 

Desired Qualifications

         One year of course work in Agriculture, Horticulture or related field.

         Course work in botany.

         Two years of experience in Agriculture, Horticulture or related field.

Primary Objective

Performs a wide variety of tasks involving the operation of the Yard Waste Site.

Major Areas of Accountability 

Interacts in a customer friendly manner with Yard Waste Site users.

         Verify customers of the yard waste site are residents of Plymouth, Long Lake, Medicine Lake or Wayzata.

         Provide guidance and instructions to users regarding the yard waste site.

          

 Record data usage of Yard Waste Site.

         Use iPad to document Yard Waste Site use.

         Maintain accurate records of Yard Waste Site usage.

         Verify whether user brought in leaves and/or brush/logs and how much.

         Verify whether user would be taking chips or mulch and how much.

 
Perform inspection of incoming material to Yard Waste Site.                                    

         Visually monitor incoming materials being disposed of to ensure that only yard waste is being received and that foreign items are not co-mingled.


Maintains a clean, organized, safe and welcoming Yard Waste Site.

         Directs users to appropriate location to dispose of materials.

         Verifies that the piles get pushed back at the beginning and end of each shift.

         Safety is a high priority, verify that the site is free of hazards for customers.

          

Performs other duties as assigned.

Primary Objective

The Weed Inspector responds to nuisance vegetation complaints and follows up to ensure compliance with City Code section 807.

Major Areas of Accountability 

         Keep accurate records of nuisance vegetation complaints.

o    Answer all correspondences (phone calls, emails, etc.)

o    Maintain spreadsheet of each complaint.

         Inspect nuisance vegetation complaints.

o    Identify noxious weeds, prohibited plants and rank vegetation.

o    Notify property owners of situations requiring abatement via letter.

o    Record details in spreadsheet.

         Issue force cut notice to contractor for properties not in compliance.

o    Provide maps and details.

o    Follow up inspections after contractor invoicing.

o    Record details in spreadsheet.

o    Create requests for invoice to the non-compliant property owners.

         Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

         Knowledge and ability to identify common perennial and annual weeds.

         Must have a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license with a good driving record.

         One year of experience with word processing and spreadsheet applications.

         Familiarity with or ability to quickly learn and use mobile iPad GIS technology.

Minnesota State University, Mankato is seeking applications for a Groundskeeper Intermediate (Seasonal) Position. This position exists to perform skilled management care for one-third of the 303 acres of grounds and all shrub, tree, and other plant pruning and trimming on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato. This position has been assigned to a weather-essential function under the provision of MnSCU Regulation 4.4 and the Minnesota State University Weather & Emergency Closure Policy. 

The required qualifications for this position are as follows: Ability to train and direct the work of less experienced groundskeepers or work crews sufficient to assign responsibilities and inspect finished work.; Ability to read, interpret and follow oral and written instructions sufficient to independently complete assignments timely using accepted practices and safe techniques.; Knowledge of horticulture techniques and practices (planting schedules, germination intervals, and transplantation procedures) sufficient to maintain and improve facility grounds/landscape and recognize and/or treat plant diseases and pests.; Groundskeeping experience on a multiple building complex including the care of lawns and woody and herbaceous plants using accepted horticultural practices.; Experience with the safe use of and simple repair of hand-held tools, riding machinery (all types of lawn and landscape equipment), and snow removal equipment (hand and heavier equipment).; Basic knowledge of chemical fertilizer or pesticide application and related safety practices.; Must have ability to lift and move from 40 to 80 lbs.; Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions.; Class D MN Driver's License at the time of hire.

Full Time  260 days/8 hrs/day.
Responsible for the maintenance and seasonal needs of school district sites and grounds. 

Duties include:  Maintain shop facilities, records and inventories.  Respond to service calls as assigned. Assist building staff and other maintenance and building staff with maintaining the outside facilities.  Maintain truck inventory and department equipment in a safe and efficient manner.  Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Buildings & Grounds or designee.

Minimum Qualifications:  High school diploma or equivalent, plus 5 years of varied experience in grounds maintenance and turf care.  Knowledgeable in the operation and function of grounds equipment.  Ability to troubleshoot equipment failures.  Ability to understand and observe oral and written instructions.  Ability to read, understand, and follow architectural, mechanical, schematic, electric, etc. drawings. Motivated self-starter; well-organized and efficient; ability to work with minimum supervision and direction. 

Current MN Class B driver's license required.  (Please indicate on your application whether or not you have the Class B driver's license.)  Ability to drive and operate pickup trucks, dump trucks, trucks with snowplows, trucks with trailers.  Ability to operate tractors & skid loaders, with all related implements used for grounds care and snow removal.

Ability to lift a minimum of 100 lbs., to lift, carry, bend as needed. 

Ability to maintain regular attendance, which includes completing an assigned day.  Ability to perform position responsibilities, including physical factors, work devices and materials handling, data functions, and people functions.

Preferred Qualifications:  Vocational training and/or experience in grounds maintenance or turf management preferred.  Low Voltage License preferred.  Certified Irrigation Technician preferred.

The mission of the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation is to promote the green industry in Minnesota through support of research, education and outreach at the University of Minnesota and elsewhere. The MTGF pursues its mission in various ways. One of these is an annual "Call For Proposals," titled the "MTGF Research Gift Program," whereby researchers, instructors and outreach faculty and staff involved in turf and grounds work may submit requests for unrestricted gifts to support their activities. As a 501(c)(3) corporation, funding approved by the MTGF will not be subjected to overhead or other indirect charges or costs. The dates for submission, review and approval may change on an annual basis as well as the protocol stipulated for the submission of gift requests.
